As you’ve heard, my mom has been getting back into the real life routine after more than a year of COVID isolation. One of the first things she asked me, amid doctor and physical therapist appointments, “what did you do to your eyebrows?”. Apparently she liked my eyebrows since I’d had them micro-bladed at a salon. I realized she wanted to have her eyebrows done too. Nearly forty years ago she had gotten tatooed eyeliner and eyebrows with her sister on a whim in Hong Kong. Much of that dye has long since faded away. I thought the desire for outward beauty had also faded away, but I was wrong.

I realized my mom wanted to not just feel good (body, mind, spirit) but she wanted to look good too. Here’s what we did:

1) I went into my closet and brought some clothes I thought she would enjoy. She had fun dressing up and trying things on.

2) Next, I pulled out my makeup and dabbed some light SPF mineral powder on her sun spots; she and my dad are both obsessed with them - she’s even had them lasered off but they came back, to her disappointment. I also helped her pluck stray hairs on her eyelids / brows.

3) I then put a little styling oil in her hair and complimented her salt and pepper look but suggested she get a trim. She looked quite pleased when I said that. My dad prefers her hair dyed but she seems to be using her voice and rocking more of a natural look these days.

4) Finally, I gave her a sleek black visor to replace the terry cloth one she had - it would still provide some sun protection (for the spots) but looked a bit sleeker and more polished.

After the mini refresh my mom seemed a little brighter and happier. I guess we can work on the inside and outside together!

Update! I took my mom to get a fancy haircut and she loved it. Here are the before and after photos. I think it was the first time my mom opted for no hair coloring. She wants to embrace her beautiful natural color and our stylist did just that!
